This is Lex Fridman's podcast studio, where out of a single room in Austin, TX he runs one of the world's largest podcasts

With surprisingly little equipment and some hard work, you can theoretically get more viewership/listenership than major broadcasting companies!

It takes surprisingly little equipment to do this:

  • Microphones: Lex utilizes the Shure SM7B dynamic microphones, known for their warm and clear sound, making them a popular choice among podcasters.

  • Audio Interface: To connect his XLR microphones to his recording setup, he employs the Focusrite Scarlett series audio interface, which converts analog signals to digital.

  • Portable Recorder: For mobile recording sessions, Lex uses the Zoom H4n recorder, a reliable device for capturing high-quality audio on the go.

  • Mic Preamp: A Cloudlifter CL-1 is included in his setup to provide additional clean gain to the microphones, ensuring optimal audio levels.

  • Cameras: Lex's video recordings are captured using Sony a6400 mirrorless cameras, which offer excellent image quality and are well-suited for podcasting setups.

  • Boom Arm: The RODE PSA1 professional studio boom arm is used to position the microphones conveniently and reduce desk noise.

The funny thing is when I moved into my current house, I turned a 13' by 14' spare bedroom into a podcast studio:

How it started:

Early setup:

V2 setup (current):

However I now actually prefer to go into a professional studio to record podcasts!

I found out that having a producer over for hours, a guest over....ended up being wayyyyy too busy, and it would be like 6 hours of hanging out and goofing around.

Whereas when I go to a professional studio I'm in-and-out and they handle everything without a million people coming over to my house.

Additional Insights

Recording at home can be fun and creative, but it often involves logistical challenges like managing guests and equipment. On the flip side, using a professional studio can be a game-changer for efficiency. It's similar to cooking at home versus dining out—sometimes it's worth letting someone else handle the details so you can focus on the main event.
