End AI Fear With One Seuss Analogy

Most people can't actually explain what AI is to a friend/coworker.

Take a page from Dr. Seuss (trust me) & you'll be set.

When someone asks me "how does ChatGPT actually work?" I used to reach for words like "pre-training," "back propagation" and "transformers." And I'd watch their eyes glaze over (understandably) in real time.

So now I just say this:

If I say the words, "the cat in the ___," what comes next?

Your brain automatically fills in "hat," right? Mazel tov, you're an LLM.

An LLM is a machine that has read basically the entire internet, and all it does is predict the next word.

Over and over. "The cat in the" → "hat." Then it looks at "the cat in the hat," predicts the next word, and the next one, and the next one.

It's not thinking. It's not reasoning the way you do. It's the most powerful autocomplete ever built, so good at guessing the next word that the sentences it strings together can write your email, debug your code, or explain quantum physics.

That one reframe does two things for your team:

1) It kills the fear. "AI is coming for my job and I don't even understand it" turns into "oh… it's fancy autocomplete." Way less scary. Way more usable.

It builds the right instincts. Once people get that AI is just predicting the most likely next word, they suddenly understand why it makes things up (it's guessing), why specific prompts get better answers (you're shaping the guess), and why it sounds so confident even when it's wrong (it's always just predicting).

2) You don't need your colleagues to understand the math. You need them to understand "the cat in the ___." There's no downside to going down the rabbit hole & understanding AI at a mathematical/technical level, but it's not necessary if a professional simply wants to understand it well enough to work well enough with it.

Steal the analogy. It's the fastest way I know to take someone from "AI scares me" to "ok, I get it."

AI freaks people out mostly because they can’t explain it, not because it’s actually that mysterious. This post gives you one Dr. Seuss line you can steal to instantly calm AI panic at your company. No math. No jargon. Just “the cat in the ___” and a simple way to turn fear into “oh, I get it now.”

The Seuss Analogy That Kills AI Fear

Skip the buzzwords like pre-training and backprop. Ask: “If I say ‘the cat in the ___,’ what comes next?” Their brain auto-fills “hat.” Then you drop the punchline: “Congrats, you’re an LLM.” From there it’s simple: an LLM has read a giant chunk of the internet and just predicts the next word over and over. It’s not “thinking” like a human, it’s the world’s most powerful autocomplete. Suddenly AI goes from sci‑fi threat to a tool they can actually use.

The Psychology Behind Why This Works

  • It turns a vague, scary buzzword into a concrete, silly kids-book example.
  • It replaces “AI is magic” with “AI is autocomplete,” which feels understandable and safe.
  • It gives people instant intuition for hallucinations: it’s just guessing the next word.
  • It makes prompting click: better instructions = better word guesses.
  • It lowers the bar: they don’t need math, just “the cat in the ___” to work effectively with AI.

How Teams Can Use This Analogy

OutboundCo logo

A sales team lead starts every AI training by asking reps to finish the sentence “the cat in the ___,” then uses that moment to explain large language models as autocomplete so reps stop freezing up around AI tools.

LedgerLine CPA logo

A mid-sized accounting firm bakes the Seuss analogy into onboarding so non-technical staff understand that AI is simply predicting likely next words and feel safe experimenting with it in their workflows.

Northwind Apps logo

A product org uses the “cat in the hat” explanation in internal decks so stakeholders finally grasp why the model sometimes makes things up and why precise prompts dramatically improve results.

It's not sexy to say, but most of AI transformation has nothing to do with AI.

There are 10 steps in the sequence of making an internal process or external product AI-native.

Only 1 step is AI, and ironically, the other 9 steps are the far harder part.

Step 1: Identify the problem

- find the manual process worth automating. turn your brain off autopilot & turn on your "suck meter". ...

In case it’s helpful, I shared this AI cheat sheet with a bunch of exec friends today:

1. Start with a tight leash

Think of AI like a genius intern. High agency, high intelligence, and raw horsepower. The worst thing you can do when the genius intern joins your company is give them 5 tasks and say “go.” They’ll end up doing a C+ job at each task. Instead, you start with a very short leash, give them one low-stakes job, and offer enough feedback until you they’ve reached your standard of good & earned some trust. Then you extend the leash little-by-little, as quantity of feedback goes down, quality of work goes up, and trust grows.

2. Don’t half-ass the onboarding
