Most products don’t have a pricing problem, they have a focus problem. The pyramid in the image nails it: the more you try to be everything for everyone, the more you slide down into commodity pricing. The real money is at the top of that pyramid—where you do one thing absurdly well and charge accordingly.

Reading the Pyramid

The base layer of the image is “Everything for everyone – commodity price.” That’s your bloated, feature-stuffed product where nobody’s sure what it’s really for. The middle layer is “Fewer features – clear value,” where customers finally understand why it exists. The top layer is “One thing done best – premium price,” where specialists live and margins get fat. The arrows on the sides say it all: more features push you down, higher prices pull you up.

How to Move Up the Pricing Pyramid

  • Cut every feature that doesn’t directly support your main promise.
  • Rewrite your offer around one specific outcome, not a laundry list of capabilities.
  • Raise prices after trimming, not before, to signal you’re now the specialist.
  • Use your marketing to repeat that one thing you do best until it’s boring to you and obvious to everyone else.
